The 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L Powertrain Control Module - PCM- is positioned in the engine compartment. PCM is also known as SBEC ( Single Board Engine Controller ) or an Engine Computer. It's a pre-programmed digital computer that operates the fuel system, emission control devices, regulates the ignition timing, charging system, speed monitoring system, air-fuel ratio, air conditioning compressor, as well as the idle speed.
The programming settings of PCM can be changed depending on operating conditions of the vehicle: the PCM accepts input signals from various sensors and regulates the vehicle's operations through various system components (PCM Outputs), based on the collected data.
After that information is received from the sensors, the PCM will set all the listed parameters accordingly:
- ignition timing
- manifold absolute pressure
- throttle position
- engine RPM
- engine coolant temperature
- AT transmission gear position
- generator charge rate
- speed
- brake switch
- air conditioning clutch switch

The PCM has a voltage converter inside that regenerates battery voltage to a 5.0 Volt standard. That's being used to power the crankshaft/camshaft position sensors, speed sensor, MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor) and TPS sensor (Throttle Position Sensor).
How To Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L
The PCM is placed on the cowl panel on the right side of the engine compartment.
Replacement
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the coolant reserve/overflow tank (mounted on 1
bolt and 2 nuts). - Delicately unplug the three 32–way connectors
at PCM. - Remove the mounting bolts (3).
- Pull the PCM out.
Installation
- Examine all the pins in the three 32–way electrical connectors for damage. Make sure that they are all ok.
- Install PCM. Tighten the mounting bolts to 1 N·m (9 in. lbs.) torque (3 bolts).
- Mount coolant reserve/overflow tank.
- Connect the negative cable back to the battery.
